    Fabulous

The room was spacious and clean.

The bedroom not having a window was a bit stuffy and we felt closed in. Also, I was not impressed by the 3.6% American Express surcharge. There is no way that AMEX charges this in comparison to 1% by Visa and Mastercard for your type of establishment. In any case, the fees are high enough that the use of a prestige card like Amex should be included in the price.

    Good

The location is fabulous. easy access to beach and dining. the staff obliging when we asked for room upgrade.

The studio apartment was at the rear of the resort in an aged block. the view from the apartment was the back wall of the multi level car park. we consequently asked for an upgrade & paid accordingly. i would not recommend the zenith apartments.

    Good

Nearness to beachside, hotel and reasonable restaurants. Good long weekend venue.

The rooms were poorly designed. There was no natural light coming into the bedroom and it felt "dungeon -like". The air conditioning did not operate in the bedroom and we were forced to sleep in the loungeroom due to the heat and stuffiness. Even the air conditioning was poor in the loungeroom as we were forced to keep it at 23 degrees which is too uncomfortable to sleep at night.

    Very good

Convenient. Just needed an overnight stay to visit family in Nelson Bay and hadn't tried Shoal Bay Resort before. Apartment was ideally suited to our needs.

Remembering to take both access cards when you go outside. One of the two lift access cards did not work.

    Breakfasts and Spa facility

Uncomfortable mattress in room W103. I have no back problems but each morning when I awoke I had severe back pain. The good news is that it was cured by your spa!

I liked the area, the beach and pool facilities. Rooms were reasonably clean.

I stayed in their Zenith complex and I consider that's not value for money. That area of the hotel is like a separated module, no views at all and it's quite an untidy area. I was aware that my booking was for the worse category in the hotel, but this should be warned in advance. The rat we pay is not in accordance to what we got. I should also be advise that no childrens are allowed in the spa are. For a couple with a bay, then the spa area doesn't exist...

    Very good

The location and the spa and mineral pools.

The weather! Would have preferred a room with an ocean view.

Location was right on the beach. Best beach in area. Gorgeous natural backdrop.

Where to start? Misrepresentation of the 'four star' rating on Booked.net ruined our stay at shoal bay. Had there been anything to warn me that seriously awful budget rooms were mixed into the regular room list without any warnings, I would have been saved from the most disappointing and embarrassing experience ever. I was treating my sister from Europe to her first (and now possibly last) Australian holiday resort experience. On arrival at the reception we were directed to drive into the rear car park and from there told to go straight through to a door off a fire stair behind the carpark. Then use a key card to pass outside onto a small open bridge (with weeds each side up to eye level) up a full flight of concrete stairs with our heavy suitcases, then along a long exterior access balcony (with charming views of the abandoned site adjacent) to the motel style doorway. Then the key card failed so I had to retrace my steps to get another key card. At this point I mentioned to the kid on the desk that the Zenith wing was not looking like the four star accommodation I believed I had booked, and was scolded that if I had booked on the hotels website it would have been clear that there were various levels of rooms available, and that I had simply booked a budget room! That having used a 'third party' booking agency, any omissions in their site were no responsibility of the hotel... Though normally this verbal shrug would have been a red rag to me, I was so exhausted that I simply decided to retrieve the damned key and get horizontal for a while, intending to find an adult to speak to later... Eventually got into the basic one bed apartment with two windows... But on opening curtains, we discovered that a whole low-rent apartment block had living rooms looking directly at us, but three metres away from our windows! No net-type curtains were behind the total blockout curtains, so it was either a case of being in the dark or in full view of a wall of strangers!

    Superb

The standard of the apartment we eventually upgraded to. The location of the complex.

The standard of the studio apartment which we originally checked into. Cannot understand why they would use those apartments when the occupancy would have been around 20% for the whole complex.
